  • Year 9 Tug of War

    Fri 16 Jul 2021

The Year 9s finished their first year at TWBS with the long-standing tradition of Tug of War

A hotly contested event saw some great teamwork and strength on show from all the Houses, but the grand final between Lambdin and Ford was a thrilling encounter.

Each pull was hard to call as each team had periods of dominance, but Ford came out as eventual winners today. Well done to all the boys for their efforts in House events this year – here’s looking forward to a more usual programme of events as they move into Year 10 from September.

  • Final House Standings & Cock House Trophy

    Fri 16 Jul 2021

After a much disrupted school year, it is with a mixture of great pride and relief that our House programme of activities was able to run to completion this time around.

In 2019-2020 everything ran as normal until the end of March when schools went to online learning, bubbles were suddenly formed, teenage boys were taught how to wash their hands, but more so all the vital add-ons and extras that make a school so much more than a results machine had to stop.
In 2020-21 the impact of this was truly felt. Year 11 and Sixth Form had their Football competition in December, but it was not until May that the Year 11s were able to have more events put on for them as the pressure of TAGS and CAGS and the January-March lockdown was felt.
Year 12 were able to have their House events day this Wednesday to go along with their House Sports events last week and this. Bridge Building, Escape Room, Handball, Basketball, Rocket Building, Public Speaking, Rowing and Rugby were all missed this year.

However, especially for Year 9 & 10, Cross Country, Ultimate Frisbee, DT Invention, Art, Football, Creative Writing, Drama, Music, Hockey, Table Tennis, Dodgeball (Year 11), Quiz, Athletics, Softball, Cricket, Tennis, Chess (Year 11), Badminton (Year 11 & VI Form) and finally Tug-of-War HAVE managed to go ahead.

And so to the final standings:

    8th WOODLAND (195)

    7th ALLEN (197)

    6th OTTREY (206)

    5th BURGESS (212)

    4th WARWICK (219)

    3rd FORD (225)

    2nd LAMBDIN (226)

    1st BURNETT (245)

  • TWBS – Year 9 & 10 Summer House Activities

    Fri 16 Jul 2021

This week has seen our Year 9 pupils, on Monday, and Year 10 pupils, on Thursday, take part in one of tennis, softball or cricket for their House.

These events have been part of our run in to the end of another very strange sporting year, but thankfully the weather was warm and dry for the events, Covid absences had minimal impact on participation, and so the enthusiasm and the enjoyment of the pupils was undiminished.

The Tennis at Eton College was ably run by Mr Jeffery on both days and saw Woodland complete the double – winning both the Year 9 & Year 10 events.

Mr Clark oversaw the Cricket over on Stovell, ably assisted in the main by Mr Wilson & Mr Kayani (& Mrs Winters on Tuesday). Another double was completed here, where incredibly both the finals were hotly contested between Warwick and Burnett, with Burnett winning both!

In the Softball Ford were losing finalists in both Year groups, winners in Year 9 being Lambdin and in Year 10, Burgess. Mr Woods & Mrs Lawson ensured rules and regulations were strictly adhered to with the Year 9 competition while Mr Chester, Mrs Lawson & Mrs Winters did the same for the Year 10.

  • Year 10 end of year painting

    Wed 14 Jul 2021

The year 10 art class have been working relentlessly on their final pieces. These are large scale paintings using acrylic paint. Each student was asked to choose from the following themes: Identity, landscape, animals or figures.  Some students decided to combine a couple of the themes to create their own interpretations.

I am very proud of my class and what they have accomplished. Each work is unique and meaningful as everyone has developed their own unique style in the course of the year. It was their first time painting on a large scale canvas and they did so with fervour and ambition. It really is a joy to teach them, since the whole group is highly motivated and passionate about art.

‘‘This is my first portrait painting based on my favourite childhood film, Kiriakou: a 2005 animated movie, set in my mother’s home country’’  Jamie Haydock-Wilson

  • Frontline History comes to TWBS

    Fri 09 Jul 2021

“On Tuesday 6th July Frontline Living History came to our school. When we first walked into the room where it was being held I was surprised by the fact that they were both dressed in full world war one uniform.

As I took my seat I noted the various weapons and old military garb that lay down before me. The first thing they did was tell us about two “death pennies” which were a circle of metal that would be sent to the families of dead soldiers!!

Over the next hour we got to hold all sorts of weaponry from the war. From shrapnel artillery to mace’s, they had it all. One of my favorite stories is about Jam tin grenades. Jam tin grenades were grenades that the soldiers would make themselves, they would stuff anything they could find in, and they would finally put gunpowder and a fuse in. The funny thing was that the Australian soldiers would put in an instant fuse and chuck it over unlit. The German soldiers would think “oh cool a free grenade”, they would light the grenades then BOOM!!

Another interesting thing they showed us was how the gases smelt, and it was a really weird experience to know that the smell of freshly cut grass meant death for these young men. We also learned about how they would treat the soldiers which tied nicely into our learning. In conclusion I am really grateful that living history decided to visit our school and I would like to thank our teachers for organizing it.”  Peter Jansen-Spence,  Year 9

“Two experts on WWI came in to talk about weapons, statistics, uniforms and more from the First World War. The experts gave detailed explanations on how these weapons had been developed and used. Real WWI helmets were also on show for students to look at and try on. It was so cool!”  Joe Gerrard, Year 10

“Especially during these difficult times, it was truly amazing to see how they managed to interact with the crowd and allow us to handle interesting pieces of History. This topic is one of many I find fascinating, so bringing it to life for me was a real treat. They managed to teach our curriculum in about 2 hours and it was really helpful for my history course. I just wish It could have gone on longer and lasted all day!”  Jack Nelhams, Year 10

  • Field Events for House Sports at TVAC

    Fri 09 Jul 2021

On Wednesday after school, the Field events for House Sports were held at TVAC. A good turnout of pupils, especially in years 9 & 10, were made for exciting competitions across the events. Highlight performances came from:

    • Harvey Brook in the Y9 triple jump (11.10m), Kyle Golding in the Y10 discus (26.45m) and javelin (38.48m) – distances that would enable them to compete at a District standard (in a normal year!)
    • Y12 students, Fynn Starkie & Mickey Iqbal, who won 3 and 2 of their events respectively

My thanks go to all the PE staff (Messrs Jeffery, Paul, Clark, Woods, Chester) & House staff (Mrs Winters, Mr Wilson, Mr Le Paih & Mrs Lawson) and the kind volunteers, Mr Bottomley and Mr Elliott, for their vital help in making sure the events all ran smoothly and safely.

We all look forward to the Track events on Stovell starting at 9am on Tuesday for those age groups – and pray for dry weather too!

  • NHS Frimley’s advice as attendance cases rise

    Wed 07 Jul 2021

Due to the recent increase in children’s and young people’s Emergency Department attendances and the predicated rise in respiratory problems, it is now more important than ever that families become familiar with the different illnesses and how to deal with them in the best way.

When children become ill it can be difficult for their parents and carers to always know the best way to care for them, particularly if they are very young and can’t tell you exactly what is wrong.

The NHS Frimley Healthier Together website : https://frimley-healthiertogether.nhs.uk/ is here to support parents and carers to help them manage a range of common childhood illnesses themselves. The site provides information to help them recognise what might be wrong, what to do to help their children whilst at home, and where to go for more help if they do need to see a healthcare professional.

The website has been designed by local and national paediatric experts and based on trusted national guidelines to support parents and carers at a time when they often face the predicament of managing minor illness in their children. When to seek medical advice? When to try over the counter or home remedies? Do they need antibiotics?

The site gives “red flags” of worrying features that need urgent medical review. This way parents and carers can be reassured they are taking appropriate action at home and know when they need more specialist help.

By having all the information in one place and where people know the information has come from trusted health professionals and local service providers, Healthier Together can help parents feel more comfortable to make the right decisions about what to do next for their child’s care. The website also provides:

    • Website translation in over 75 languages, including English.
    • The ability to SMS text message specific pages to families and friends instantly.
    • A user-friendly mobile version with the same accessibility and navigation.

Dr Alexandra Streeter De Diego, Clinical Lead Frimley Healthier Together 0-18, said: “The website is an excellent starting place for parents and carers who are worried about the health and wellbeing of their child. The website is divided into sections for parents/carers, mental health and wellbeing, and a young people’s section. Topics covered include newborns and babies under 3 months, feeding your baby, keeping your child fit and well, should you send your child to nursery or school, young people’s mental and emotional wellbeing and Covid-19.

“The website also links to the Frimley Health Maternity website, which covers the stages of pregnancy, from the planning stage, through the pregnancy itself, to labour and birth and then advice to new mothers on how they can care for their babies and themselves.

Feedback from parents has been positive. One parent said: “It’s like having a mini doctor for you at home, that’s how I see it. It gives so much information on what I should do when they are ill, in what cases I need to get more support or go to hospital, or how I can treat my baby at home.”

  • Year 13 boys complete practice DofE Gold Award

    Tue 06 Jul 2021

Seven Year 13 boys, together with nine Year 12 and 13 Windsor Girls, successfully completed the practice expedition for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme last week in the Brecon Beacons.

A challenging week in many respects: no TV or phone signal for the England v Germany game; thunder and lightening on the exposed mountainside; negotiating navigation around a landslide; wild camping; carrying all food and equipment needed for 5 days and 4 nights!  The last night was spent at Llantony Priory (as pictured) which is in a Dark Skies area and in the words of Take That, ‘the stars really did come out that night’! Stunning!

I was incredibly proud when a member of the public, that was camping alongside us, commented how polite and respectful the students’ had been during their stay.  They have learnt how to prepare, pack, plan and navigate, camp, re-plan, care for their feet, cook and carry on despite the rain.

The assessed expedition will happen for these students in September, just before they leave for university. I wish them a restful and successful summer!

    Yours in the great outdoors,

    Mrs Lawson
    Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator

    Tue 06 Jul 2021

He is now on his way to Tokyo in this year’s Olympics – fantastic news! Good luck Taylor!

Taylor’s younger brother, Bayley, came a very respectable 8th in the selection process.

    Congratulations to both boys!

  • Pride Month 2021

    Fri 02 Jul 2021

During the month of June, we have celebrated Pride Month here at TWBS.

All month long we have educated staff and students about tolerance and inclusivity with a particular focus on the LGBTQ+ community.

Highlights go to the Boat Club for sporting Pride All-in-ones during their races at Dorney, Senior Prefects sporting rainbow silk ties and lots of staff and students getting involved in colourful socks for Rainbow Day.

A massive thank you goes to everyone who participated and learnt something over Pride Month. I’m sure this is the beginning of creating a fully inclusive school.
