  • House Events

    Fri 23 Oct 2020

This week all our Year 9 and Year 10 boys took part in their second House events this year, either playing Football or Ultimate Frisbee, or taking part in Art, DT or Creative Writing tasks.

The Year 10 DT project was to plan and design a prototype environmentally friendly/reusable device whereas the Year 9’s designed and made an educational toy. My thanks to Mr Noctor for organising and running these events, and to Mr Downing for his entirely impartial and expert judging of entries.

The themes and entries from the Year 9 & 10 artists are detailed elsewhere in this newsletter, but the standard and variety of art produced by all the boys was amazing, with inspiration from Kara Walker for the Year 10s and Aboriginal Art for Year 9.  My thanks to Miss Tombs for devising and organising this and enabling those students to showcase their talents.

The Creative Writing event revolved around a random draw of “task cards” giving a theme, a scenario, a protagonist and an event. Dystopian robot stories rubbed shoulders with romance on a desert island, with the performance and visual representation of the stories also part of the grading criteria. Mrs Winters was the mastermind behind this, so my thanks go to her for this event.

The PE department and Mark Bignal from the Windsor School Sports Partnership did a fantastic job running the Football and Ultimate Frisbee events in near-perfect weather conditions, as per the attached photos. Warwick claimed a clean sweep of the Frisbee and Burnett were victorious in both Football competitions. Please see attached photos for both these events.

  • Science Society

    Thu 22 Oct 2020

n order to meet Covid restrictions, science students have devised one ‘Science Society’, to start after half term:

    When? – Tuesday second break

Who? – all keen scientists in any year

Where? – Sixth form in room A123.  Other students by video link from A124, A127 and A128.  You may bring and eat your lunch, leaving the room tidy for next lesson.

What?  Each week up to Christmas, a Sixth former will give a talk on a subject for which they have become a science specialist.  There will be a timetable in the science corridor.  After Christmas, we hope to stage some competitions like the marshmallow tower completed last year…..

  • Year 10 create Silhouettes for House Art Event

    Wed 21 Oct 2020

On Monday for the house art event, year 10 students were asked to create silhouettes inspired by the work of American artist Kara Walker in light of black history month.

Walker creates silhouettes to form tales about moments in black history and forces the viewer to confront this painful history.  Each house was asked to portray the life of an influential black person by creating silhouettes to tell their story.

Warwick came first with their depiction of Louis Armstrong, Burgess came second with their take on Frederick Douglass’ life and thirdly Burnett won for their creative efforts on representing the musical success of Ethel Waters.

  • World Mental Health Day 2020

    Fri 16 Oct 2020

On Monday we celebrated World Mental Health Day.

World Mental Health Day, a campaign by the Mental Health Foundation, is annually held on October 10th to raise public awareness about mental health issues worldwide: https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/world-mental-health-day

Here at TWBS we began the day with a whole school assembly led by Fraser Upton and Charlie Wallace, who are both Deputy Head Boys. In addition, staff and sixth form students were encouraged to wear a yellow ribbon in support of Young Mind’s campaign #helloyellow: https://youngminds.org.uk/

This year the Senior Prefect team have chosen to focus on raising awareness of mental health throughout the school. This is the message that they delivered during Monday’s assembly:

This year, we, the Senior Prefect team, have decided to make mental health our priority and will be supporting a charity that deals with this important issue. The name of this charity will be revealed in the coming weeks.  We decided to choose a charity that is relevant to current problems such as COVID-19 and it’s noticeable impact on many peoples’ emotional wellbeing, especially that of young people.  Through promoting #HelloYellow by wearing yellow ribbons, for example, we are raising awareness of a healthy mental attitude and hope to make a difference to students’ mental health now, as well as in the future with upcoming fundraisers and events.  To show our commitment and support for mental health, we have taken selfies and surrounded ourselves with words related to positive mental wellbeing…

Please support their endeavours by encouraging your son to talk about his mental health. And, if you have any concerns, do remember to get in touch with us.
