  • 2nd XI Football vs St Bart's

    Wed 30 Mar 2022

Windsor Boys' 2nds started off with high intensity against the quiet St Bartholomew's. With Windsor's controlling the game for the first 20 minutes our first goal finally came, with Morgan Malik taking on countless players then off loading the ball through to Nathan Jones, our striker, a calm and collective finnish from Nathan taking it around the goalie to then pass the ball in the net. Near the end of the second half Windsor then make a counterattack, with Herbie Ruse and Morgan storming up the pitch with the ball making light work of St Bart's midfield. The ball then played through to Nathan who then squared it off to Luke Smith who then passed the ball in the net. After having an outstanding first half we walked off the pitch 2-0 up.   Windsor then went out with the same intensity and confidence as the first half but just couldn't seem to put the ball in the back of the net. After hitting the woodwork at least four times in the second half the third goal finally came. Will Gregory at left back sent a lovely ball over to Nathan once again who calmly slotted the ball past goalie to make it 3-0. After finishing at 3-0 the Windsor Boys’ walked off the pitch extremely happy with the amount of effort put in by all the players. A special mention for the two centre backs Jack and Ilio denying the St Bart's forwards on every attack. Also, a special mention to Morgan Malik playing in midfield creating some beautiful attacks for the Windsor Boys’ forwards to play with.  Lastly, man of the match goes to the Captain playing in the middle of park, Herbie Ruse. Herbie was running the midfield with so much confidence and skill, always encouraging the boys to get stuck in and play hard.

  • U15A Hockey vs Gordon School

    Mon 28 Mar 2022

The U15 boys played their last hockey game of the season against Gordon School on Monday 28th March. Windsor Boys’ were losing 2-0 at half term but put in amazing second half performance, with the game ending 2-2. The boys have worked extremely hard throughout the hockey season and should be proud of what they have achieved this year.

  • U16 Rugby National 7’s

    Wed 23 Mar 2022

On Wednesday it was the turn of our U16 side to travel to Rosslyn Park for their National 7s competition. The sun again shone for a glorious day of rugby and the boys were excited to be shown on the livestream for their opening game v Clifton College (please do re-watch here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/JP32oK1BGII?autoplay=1 from 1h 36min onwards). Clifton were patient in attack and blessed with a winger with supreme speed; they kept the ball most of all the first five minutes of the game and so TWBS chances were few and far between, but glimmers of good attacking play were seen, especially the threat of Mark Venter’s pace, Harry Bicknell’s physicality and Will Moss’ accurate passing. The TWBS defence was well organised and aggressive tackles were made when needed. Two length of the field tries were either side of a well-worked team try left TWBS facing 0-19 scoreline at half time – the harshness of 7s being that if you don’t have the ball, you cannot score! The second half started with a good set of possession for TWBS, but quickly went downhill. Mark was officiously shown a yellow card for a hot-headed piece of petulance, reducing TWBS down to six players. The resulting penalty possession saw Clifton score almost immediately, taking full advantage of their numerical advantage. A period of possession after the re-start saw a familiar TWBS tale – some very good play undone by a simple handling error, gifting possession away. Two successive quickly tapped penalties by Clifton saw captain Harry Bicknell see a disputed yellow for a team infringement; James Miller now replaced Venter as his two minutes on the naughty step were complete. Finishing the game with six on the field was always going to be tough, but the referee playing an astonishing amount of added time allowed Clifton to add some flattering points onto the scoreline.

A last-minute change to the schedule saw the boys again on the show pitch (same link, 3h05min onwards) against Ibstock Place School. From the kick off it was evident that Ibstock were again a team comfortable in possession. Organised TWBS defence held firm, even when Harry Bicknell was harshly penalised for a penalty at the breakdown. A subsequent lineout gave Ibstock clean possession and but for excellent cover tackling by Charlie McCreanor TWBS would have been a try down early on. TWBS kept possession from the resulting lineout but could not make any clear ground out of their 22, Moss then got stripped in the tackle to surrender possession that led to a well-executed kick-pass that breached the TWBS defence to open the scoring for Ibstock. Again the harshness of 7s rugby highlighted – 1 mistake = 1 try conceded! Indecisiveness from the kickoff allowed the ball to run out of play and then a sloppy lineout gave possession away inside the TWBS half. Despite a thumping tackle from captain Bicknell, Ibstock extended their lead to 12-0, and so it remained until half time, a few blades of grass the only thing preventing Charlie. Tactical substitutions made, TWBS made a flying start to the second half. McCreanor took the kickoff and then every member of the side was involved in the quick handling of the ball to Moss, turned from villain to hero immediately with a show-and-go and perfectly weighted grubber kick through that Venter expertly controlled and then dived on to score with just 21 seconds played in the second half. An error from the re-start gave Ibstock free possession on halfway and AGAIN if it wasn’t for McCreanor’s cover tackle TWBS would have conceded the softest of tries. Excellent poaching work by Mani Hilton secured a penalty for TWBS right on their own 5m line, and relief was felt all  around. A second penalty reprieved TWBS after sloppy handling, and then Ibstock had a yellow card shown for preventing Brodie Laing tapping and making a break quickly. From the resulting penalty Moss attacked the short side, passed to Bicknell who drew the last defender and timed the return pass to Moss expertly. An Ibstock hand flapped that ball down – rightly adjudged by the referee to be a deliberate knock-on the Ibstock player was also shown yellow and TWBS were awarded a penalty try for the offence. 12-12 against 5 players and all to play for! Ibstock regathered the kickoff and tried to play low-risk rugby by kicking the ball deep into the TWBS 22. It rolled out of play and from the resulting scrum Moss barrelled his way towards the tryline. He was tackled but from the resulting ruck, Bicknell received the pass and smashed his way through the Ibstock defence to touch down for the try to make it 17-12. A missed conversion gave Ibstock hope still from the kickoff. Patient Windsor defence did not allow any easy linebreaks. The pressure told and the Ibstock winger knocked on under pressure. A clean strike from the scrum gave TWBS possession and Brodie gladly kicked the ball out as time was up; a well-earned win.

The final game v Eastbourne School was a bridge too far; lethargic and ill-disciplined, Windsor made it hard for themselves by going into halftime trailing 0-33. Sloppy handling and failing to make 1-1 tackles gave cheap points to the opposition. Thankfully pride came after a fall for a change; a much improved 2nd half performance saw Eastbourne starved of possession and Windsor worked hard to score 2 tries. A losing end to the day, but memories to last a lifetime from their forays onto the internet for their first two matches, as well as meeting former Wales and British Lions Captain Sam Warburton

  • U18 Sevens Rugby – Rosslyn Park National Sevens

    Tue 22 Mar 2022

On Tuesday 22nd March, the TWBS U18s rugby sevens team took part in the National Sevens tournament at Rosslyn Park. The boys arrived in good spirits and quickly began to turn their focus to their first game against Royal Hospital School. We were met with brutal upfront tackling by the opposition, as well as crisp passing and handling, which resulted in a few early tries to RHS. It seemed the game had turned when Fynn Starkie made a bulldozing run up the centre of the pitch from a tremendous catch straight off a restart, however he was somehow chased down and held up on the try line (questionable decision?). The team did well to hold the ball better in the second half and some incredible last ditch defending by Max Ratcliffe stopped multiple attacking opportunities from resulting in tries. With some big positives to take from their first game, the boys moved into their second game against Shrewsbury College. The match started at a slow tempo for TWBS and we were punished for our mistakes but we managed to go into half time only five points down. After a wake-up call half time talk, the team came out firing, putting in some huge tackles and playing with much more urgency. Herbie Ruse made a blistering run down the right side of the pitch for a great score under the posts but unfortunately it was too little, too late. The boys narrowly missed out on a win with the final score being 7-12. Our final game of the tournament and the final TWBS rugby game for many of the squad was against Perse. The boys gave it their best shot, and nobody could fault the effort put in by everyone on the team. It seemed fatigue had really begun to set in but at no point did the boys give in, even when Fynn managed to dislocate his thumb mid hand-off! Even though we didn’t manage to win any of our games the team left with smiles on their faces and their heads held high. I can only say thank you to Mr Paul and Mr Breen for being there to support us and I hope we can take what we learnt into next year’s tournament.

  • U18 Rugby 7’s National Vase Competition

    Tue 22 Mar 2022

On Tuesday our U18 VII travelled to the National Vase Competition at Rosslyn Park. Two prior tournaments had given the boys a taste of what was to come, and they were certainly buoyed by their victory over Reed’s School at Halliford 7s on the previous Friday night.

Royal Hospital School were our first opponents of the day. They were strong, organised and clearly well-drilled. While TWBS played some good rugby, every little mistake was highlighted by our opposition who, despite a well-worked try to give Max Ratcliffe the space to put on his after-burners to score, were ruthless victors 42-7. They would go on to top the group and qualify for the QF on Wednesday. Our 2nd game was against an equally physical but less skilful Shrewsbury School. Sadly the energy and discipline that TWBS showed in the first game was missing for the first half and we went into the break 12-0 down. A rejuvenated TWBS took to the pitch for the second half and played some excellent rugby at times. Another score by Max R gave hope, but ultimately a 7-12 loss was all we could show for it. Due to their late arrival, our final game against The Perse School had been conceded to us as a walkover, securing us 3rd place in the group. Perhaps with that knowledge of the game being a “dead rubber”, TWBS were not as crisp in their passing not aggressive enough in completing tackles. 19-0 down at half time remained the score at full-time, with captain Fynn Starkie’s dislocated thumb (not pictured, you will be glad to know!) the only casualty of the second half. A great day out and the final chance for our Y13 rugby stalwarts to pull the shirt on. A team picture with Gloucester Rugby captain Lewis Ludlow one of the many memories they will take with them from the day.

  • Year 9 Hockey v Eton

    Tue 22 Mar 2022

On Tuesday last week, the Year 9 Hockey A Team faced off against a very good Eton College Team. Windsor had already been at the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat to Eton in the County tournament earlier in the session and started the game looking like a side that expected to be beaten. Eton took the lead after a few minutes and the writing could have been on the wall, but Windsor dug deep and decided they were not going to give in without a fight. This spirit was shown throughout the team with Jowan Bailey and Isaac Thornton taking control of midfield and using the full backs Will Branch and Max Hilton to attack up the wings. Windsor then came back into the game with an excellent break-away goal from the pacey Ben Swanborough. This seemed to have put some fire back into Eton and they went on full attack mode for the rest of the half, pinching a second just before half time. After the break Windsor again found themselves on the back foot but excellent defending lead by Branch and Hilton ensured that the Windsor goal stayed intact. As the second half went on Windsor grew in confidence and then equalised with an excellent goal from Tom Peace. This once again got Eton firing again and they tried all they could to get a winner but Windsor held strong and finished the game with an excellent 2-2 draw.

  • Year 12 Trip to UCAS Discovery Exhibition

    Tue 22 Mar 2022

On Tuesday, over 100 students in Year 12 visited the UCAS Discovery Exhibition at Farnborough International. This was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to engage with a wide selection of further education institutions, ranging from the University of Cambridge to the College of Esports. This event is part of the Focusing on your Future programme which aims to help all of our Sixth formers make well-informed decisions about what pathway is right for them at the end of Year 13.

  • Ultimate Frisbee Junior Indoor Nationals – 19th/20th March 2022

    Sat 19 Mar 2022

After a two year respite, the boys were eagerly anticipating Indoor Nationals at the weekend.  We went up to Wolverhampton to face up against the best schools in the UK over a two day tournament. We sent two teams of Year 9 and 10s in the U17 division so it was always going to be a tough weekend competing against a lot of older kids.
    Windsor Wolves B team list

    • Milan Martinez (Captain)
    • Josh O'Reilly
    • Oscar Khuu
    • Tristan Rees-Jones
    • Arran Eden
    • Ben Bailey
    • Jack Lee
    • Levi Nagy
    • Evan Wilks

It was a big learning curve for Windsor Wolves B with their first competition since they started playing in September. They managed to find a lot of success with Milan and Ben throwing deep shots to Evan and Josh. Their Spirit of the Game was excellent with them showing great sportsmanship. The team learnt a lot and will be working hard to move up the ranks in the years to come. The team finished 18th.

MVP (Most Valuable Player) – Milan

MIP (Most Improved Player) – Jack

MSP (Most Spirited Player) – Oscar

    Windsor Wolves A team list:

    • Marcus Kalsi-Stolen (captain)
    • Jassien Sabri
    • Will Laurie
    • Ryan James
    • Arran Eden (Saturday)
    • Levi Nagy (Saturday)

Wolves A were slightly short on numbers on the Saturday so a big thanks goes to Arran and Levi for helping out with the Saturday games. After they started gelling, they played some excellent Ultimate especially when they sorted out their defensive strategy. They just missed out on the top eight in a tight game but then controlled all their remaining games including, against their local rivals and club teammates, Reading Rhinos. Windsor Wolves A finished 9th bringing back the Plate and their first trophy success. With next year being their final year in the U17s division, they’ll be hoping to break the top four.
