  • Year 9 TWBS House Events

    Fri 22 Oct 2021

This week the Year 9 pupils and Sixth formers had their opportunity to represent their House in Rugby and Table Tennis, and the Year 9s in Art, Invention and Creative Writing too.

Thankfully for the rugby players, the overnight and early morning rain gave way to blue skies on both Monday (Year 9) and Wednesday (Sixth form) so that conditions were perfect for good running rugby. A strong Burnett side narrowly beat Allen in Year 9 while Ford were unbeaten all day to win the Sixth Form competition, victorious over (the previously undefeated) Lambdin in their final.

In Table Tennis Woodland’s Sixth formers made a mends for their dismal showing in rugby to win the tournament, while in Year 9 a full round-robin league schedule saw Burnett finish top of the pile. Some fantastic spooky stories were devised and performed in the Creative Writing – 9 Woodland with the spookiest and best entry on the day.

Personification on animals in art was the theme set by Miss Tombs for the artists, and some amazing entries (pictured elsewhere in the newsletter) were produced; Warwick’s entry was adjudicated the winning piece.

In the DT rooms the tasks were to design and prototype an educational toy for children & then sell it to the competitors in a Dragons’ Den style presentation. Some novel ideas were put forward, but the Burnett team were the ones that got the most investment and thus the winning team!

  • 2021 Swimathon for Windsor Lions

    Fri 15 Oct 2021

On Sunday morning an intrepid staff team of Miss Hague & Messrs Fousset, Clarke, Patel, Dodd & Breen plunged into the pool at Windsor Leisure Centre to raise money for the Windsor Lions in the annual Swimathon event.

The team managed a total of 3,250m in their 50 minute timed swim, just 150m behind the prefect team (who are all half our age!!)

If you think this is a brilliant achievement and would like to donate in support of the staff team, the link is: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/twbs-swim  Thank You.

  • Science Society ‘Hopping’ from Strength to Strength

    Fri 15 Oct 2021

During their lunch on Monday 11th October, Jack Nelhams (Year 11) and Oliver Sheppard (Year 13) demonstrated to a number of pupils in Sixth form and the Lower school, how to dissect a frog and rat.

Oliver expertly cut open the abdomen of the rat clearly exposing the small intestine, liver and other organs. Finally, Oliver tried to remove and view the brain but this task was just a bit too cerebral for him!

Jack who previously dissected a frog during the Open evening in September did such a princely job, that I asked him to do it again for others to see, he jumped at the opportunity. He willingly giving up his lunch to showcase the internal organs of the frog to his peers, we saw the lungs, gall bladder, fatty deposits and many other fascinating organs.

I want to thank these two boys immensely for taking the time to show this to others who are interested in science.

If anyone is interested in carrying out a dissection after half term, they need to come and speak to Mr Wilson or Mrs Arnold in the next 3 or 4 weeks.

  • Luke Austen wins Silver in C2 International Judo

    Thu 07 Oct 2021

After an 18 month break from judo competitions due to COVID restrictions Luke competed in the C2 International at the UEL Sports Doc in London.  This was his first event as a junior fighter. He won four fights with maximum ippon scores and eventually came away with a well earned silver medal.  His result means he is part of the elite athlete pathway program with England Judo (ETD Squad).

Luke will now continue to train with the top fighters in the country and hopefully he will be able to compete in European competitions in the next few months.

  • Trip to RHS Garden Wisley

    Thu 07 Oct 2021

On 5th October, eight students from across Year 9 and Year 10 were invited to attend wildlife workshops delivered by RHS Wisley staff and to consider biodiversity changes they would like to make at TWBS and the local community.  All the students made excellent contributions to the day and helped to set apart TWBS as a lead school within the Thames Valley for its efforts to improve the environment.

During the day our students got to hear from well skilled and passionate advocates for wildlife and biodiversity, and got to take part in creating “seed bombs” to help the growth and spread of wild flowers in the local area.  The quality of input from the students as they took part in discussing new innovative ideas that they wish to see implemented in the Thames Valley was exceptional.  Each student has since been personally invited to produce pieces of art and to write articles to be published in local media that promote the need to improve the biodiversity of the area based on the quality of engagement from our students.  The school has also been identified as a community with whom the Thames Valley Learning Partnership would look to invest into the development of biodiversity projects identified and lead by the students.

We all look forward to seeing those developments come to fruition in the coming weeks and months.  Well done!

  • TVLP Student Leadership Conference

    Wed 06 Oct 2021

Last week, the Senior Prefect team attended a student leadership conference at Slough & Eton College.

This event was run by the Thames Valley Learning Partnership and was attended by student leaders from all eight TVLP schools: Beechwood, Eton, Holyport, Langley, St Joseph’s and St Mary’s (as well as the host school – Slough & Eton – and ourselves, TWBS).

It was a brilliant day during which students from all schools worked together to understand more about student leadership and about community.

The best thing, from my perspective, was seeing so many students together, in person, at a conference hosted for them. In my opinion nothing beats face-to-face conversations!
