Music Report – Week 1 - Sep 10, 2021

Term has started incredibly well in the music department and there has been a real buzz. There is a lot of interest from the new Year 9 students and the current musicians and singers are excited to be back. The Big Band were able to perform to the Year 9 students on their second induction day, and we even had two Year 9 lads join the band. Arran & Harry in Year 9 were brave enough to come along on Friday morning for an early rehearsal followed by their first performance. The Year 13 Rock band “The Replicants” then performed to the whole school on Monday morning – a great way to start the day.

Extra-Curricular is a huge part of what we do in the music department, and it is great to have the full programme back. So far this term we have had:

  • 2 Big Band rehearsals which include students from WGS
  • 2 orchestra rehearsals
  • 3 rehearsals for our November musical “The Little Mermaid”
  • 2 Boys choir rehearsals
  • 1 Indian Dhol Drum rehearsal
  • 1 Percussion Ensemble
  • 1 Guitar Club session
  • 1 DJ-ing & Music production session
  • 1 Brass Band rehearsal
  • 1 year 9 & 10 Ensemble rehearsal

There has basically been something every single day before school, during the day and after school. It is great to see so much going on! Long may it continue.

Thanks to Andrei Dipper in Year 12 who supported the Boat Club WTTC Opening night. Andrei played sax and sang as well as setting up the PA system for the event. Well done to Arran Eden & Harry Whennell for their Big Band performance on their second day.

A big thanks to all the students who have attended something musical. All groups are open to all students, so I urge everyone to give something a try. Just turn up and see what you enjoy. We will be running taster sessions on instruments so that students can try them out and then start learning!

Music is back and I am so thrilled with the first week. We are looking forward to our Year 9 & 10 recital on Monday 13th September at 5pm as well as our performances at the school open evening on Tuesday 28th September. There is never a dull moment in the music department. We continue to work closely with Miss Walter in Drama and Miss Littlejohns from WGS. But we are also pleased to welcome Mr Thomas to the department as a new member of staff. Mr Thomas is a pianist and brass player and has been along to various groups this week. The singers are pleased to have another bass with them in choir.

The year has started well, and what a year it is going to be.
